It was late 1965 in Sunnyvale, California, just south of San Francisco when a garage band formed that would have an exciting and fun filled future. Drummer Ed Biser, Rhythum Guitar player Bill Rutledge and Bass player Bob Ballantyne were looking for a new lead guitar player. Marvin Thornhill tried out for lead guitar one afternoon in Bill's garage and away they went. They practiced often for the rest of 1965 and the first half of 1966 but weren't really getting anywhere. Just playing for private party's and a few social functions just wasn't enough. So, during the summer of 1966, they practiced for at least 8 hours a day all summer long and drove the neighborhood crazy. In early August, 1966, they finally got the break that they were looking for. They auditioned for the legendary Bay Area Promoter, Bill Graham, and were accepted to play in his "Battle of The Bands" in late August 1966 at the San Francisco Cow Palace along with some headliner groups. During the audition with Bill Graham, a reporter for the local newspaper picked up on this group and wrote an article about them for the paper. The first of many articles to come.
Well, they didn't win but by placing in the top 10 performing bands in front of thousands of rock fans, it sure gave them the confidence, experience and exposure that they needed to move on. Switching Bob Ballantyne to the keyboard and adding a new bass player, John Sosa, their sound became more complete. To make a long story short, they moved on to have a fun and exciting music career and to play at such places as The San Francisco Cow Palace, The San Jose Civic Auditorium, The Continental and other popular places which was a far cry from Bill's garage, private party's and social events. The rest is Rock-n-Roll history !
